STEP 3: CAUSATION VS CORRELATION

Before declaring a root cause, test it against these criteria:
**Strong causation signals (confidence 0.8+):**
- Performance shift timing MATCHES change timing closely (within 1-3 days)
- The changed element DIRECTLY affects the shifted metric (e.g., bid change → CPC change)
- No other major changes in the analysis window
- Effect persists across the full analysis period (not just a spike)
**Weak signals (confidence 0.5-0.7):**
- Performance was already trending before the change
- Multiple concurrent changes (can't isolate)
- Very short analysis window (<7 days)
- External factors present (holidays, industry events, seasonality)
**Correlation ≠ causation flags:**
- "No changes made" but CPA spiked → check for: auto-applied recommendations, website changes, tracking modifications, competitive shifts
- Gradual drift vs. sudden shift → sudden = likely specific cause, gradual = market/competition/seasonal
- Check: Did Google auto-apply any recommendations? (Settings > Auto-apply)

IF CPA spike is <20%:
→ May be normal variance, not a problem
→ Ask: "Is this outside your typical fluctuation range?"
→ Only diagnose if confirmed abnormal
→ Small accounts with <20 conversions/month can fluctuate 30%+ naturally
IF "no changes made" but CPA spiked:
→ Check in this order: (1) auto-applied recommendations, (2) website/tracking changes, (3) landing page modifications, (4) seasonal patterns, (5) competitive shifts
→ External factors are last resort, not first guess
IF data volume is very low (<10 conversions per period):
→ State: "Insufficient data for confident diagnosis"
→ Provide directional hypothesis only
→ Recommend: extend analysis window, accumulate more data before acting
IF multiple changes made simultaneously:
→ Cannot isolate with certainty, state this clearly
→ If overall result is positive: KEEP all changes, note attribution is unclear
→ If overall result is negative: recommend reverting ALL to baseline, then reintroduce one at a time with 2-week gaps
→ Never pretend you can isolate the impact of individual changes when you can't
IF tracking appears broken (conversions dropped to 0):
→ This is a MEASUREMENT problem, not a CPA problem

IF bid strategy was recently changed:
